A dog life jacket can save dogs' and humans
lives in winter. With the freezing cold weather and temperatures reaching up to
minus 14 degrees in some parts over the past few weeks in the UK, there have
been numerous heart-breaking reports in the news of both dog owners and dogs
drowning. Undoubtedly some or indeed all of these fatalities could have been
prevented if the dogs had been wearing dog life jackets.

Last week two young men were walking by an icy river with a strong current,
for some reason or other the small dog belonging to one of the men, decided
suddenly to go in - perhaps some wildlife caught his attention. The sturdy
little doggie was not wearing a dog life jacket/Life raft and was instantly in
trouble, fighting to keep above water and the owner instinctively dived into the
river to save his best friend. The conditions in the water were such that the
current was so strong and the freezing cold temperature got the better of this
fit young man and his friend on the shore went in the river to try to save the
poor man in trouble. Sadly both men were dragged under the murky water and lost
their lives.dehuan_06life
Also last week, a woman was walking her dog through a large park, alongside a
frozen lake. Her tiny dog was off the leash and went onto the icy lake to
explore and before the woman could stop her small dog, the thin ice broke and
the woman started screaming loudly, as the doggie quickly disappeared under the
ice. Fortunately an extremely brave passerby quickly removed his outer clothing
and waded into the sub-zero icy water and scooped up the tiny dog, saving his
life. Even though the lake was shallow, the dog's ability to swim was impaired
by the extreme cold. This little one was so lucky.

A dog life jacket keeps their head above water and works just like a life
jacket/plastic
components worn by people. The buoyancy that the floatation device provides
means that the dog's head will not go under icy water, therefore reducing panic
and the need for the dog to waste energy struggling but to swim to safety with
the aid of the dog life vest. Most dog life jackets have grab handles on the
back, making rescue easier - you could use a tree branch, or a stick to pull
your dog to safety with the grab handle. The protection a dog life jacket gives
makes the case less compelling to go in dangerous waters after your canine
friend. This would also give you the time to call the emergency services and
seek out a safe rescue method for your dog.
If you are going to walk anywhere near water of any kind, consider giving
your dog the protection of a dog life vest. If your dog normally wears a dog
jacket in cold weather, swap it for a dog life jacket and pop a doggie T-shirt
or hoodie underneath for extra warmth - this does work, as I tried this with my
westie in summer this year in the safety of a friend's swimming pool with me
standing right next to Dougie!
